The Benwiskin Centre takes pride in its beautiful garden and barbecue area available for guests to use.
2019 is the 14th year that this project has been running at The Benwiskin Centre. For the first three years, the project was a joint venture between the Benwiskin Centre and The Organic Centre in Rossinver. Since then a few tutors have led the group to include Martin Byrne, Ciara Barrett and Eoin Craven.
Under instruction from the tutor, course participants learnt about propagation, harvesting, soil management, crop rotation, preservation etc. reaping the benefits of their hard work come harvest time.
Items planted by the group over the years have included marigolds, cosmos, nasturtiums and borage, through to a wide selection of vegetables – carrots, parsnips, celery, cabbage, lettuce, marrows, peas, beans, celeriac and herbs to include sage, thyme, rosemary and fennel.
A polytunnel was purchased in 2014 and as a result of this the group expanded their array of crops to include tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, sweetcorn, basil and brussell sprouts (all grown in the tunnel!)
As a further measure of water conservation here at the Centre, a new 800 litre rainwater harvesting system was installed in November 2015 which will cater for all the watering needed for the gardens and polytunnel here at the Centre.
Ballintrillick Environmental Group would like to acknowledge the support they received for the purchase of the polytunnel and the rainwater harvesting system from Sligo County Council - Local Agenda 21 Environmental Fund http://www.sligococo.ie.
Well done to all the past gardeners who worked hard and hopefully have taken what they have learned and are now planning to grow their own vegetables!
